Amble, a visitors guide

Amble located on the Northumberland coast nicknamed ‘the friendliest port’ boasts fantastic seafood restaurants, boat trips to the nearby Coquet island home to puffins and seals, the gorgeous harbour village pods full of independent local goods, stunning cocktail bars and of course… award-winning fish and chips!!

The harbour area is my favourite with cute pastel beach huts along Little Shore, the small beach here and some outstanding local businesses to browse.

Salt and Co based in the harbours Coquet House is home to the most stunning handmade jewellery and gifts. Martha who owns Salt and Co is super talented and it’s somewhere I’ve purchased most of the jewellery I wear you need to visit! Also a newly opened art shop selling local artists work and gifts, Northumberand Artworks.

Puffin Cruises operate boat trips all year round to Coquet Island a trip I’ve taken a few times. In the summer see the thousands of cute puffins who make their way to our shores and the colony of seals that live there all year round! I’ve a seperate post on Coquet Island if you would like to read more information click here Coquet Island

The harbour village is a collection of cute wooden pods housing some great local businesses such as Mocha Mondo my favourite for a coffee stop, Geordie Bangers for those sausage rolls and goodies, Taste of Northumberland for local food and drink suppliers and Urban Pooch for all your doggy needs amongst many others.

As for places to eat you cant go wrong with The Fish Shack or its sister venue The Old Boat House. Both right on the harbour edge for amazing views as you dine, unreal seafood I can’t recommend them enough. In the summer the outdoor seating watching the sunset across the harbour is just stunning. The Fish Shack is one of my favourite local places to eat and there is a seperate post on this restaurant here The Fish Shack, Amble Harbour

Other cafes Lily’s Landing and The old customs house providing lovely food with views, and of course the famous Harbour chip shop and Quayside chip shop. Who doesn’t get fish and chips when you visit the coast? It’s practically law!

I recommend a visit to Hummingbird cocktail bar, super gorgeous cocktails the best Ive ever had! And their grazing boards are immense. Brewis Beer taproom on the industrial estate is another favourite with the best beers and ales and a different selection of street food vans each week.

A walk down the pier with the boats coming in and out and the lighthouse standing proud at the end this place holds a special place in my heart. Head towards the marina and at low tide you can see the old shipwrecks emerge from the harbour floor, a walk along towards the estuary to Warkworth and you’ll see two of my favourite sculptures from the recently installed art trail ‘Bord Waalk” (Bird walk said in local dialect!). The Tern Wings and Flock Sphere are my favourites from the sixteen placed around Amble. You can dowload the trail map and find more info here https://bordwaalk.co.uk/ .

The main street Queen Street has a selection of local shops and tea rooms, and your essential grocery stores. Handy if you are staying in the area for stocking up on essentials. A must visit is the boutique ice cream parlous Spurelli, artisan ice cream made on site in utterly delicious flavours, as well as hot drinks milkshakes, cakes and lite bites this has been a favourite stop of mine for years!

There is ample paid parking around the harbour in several car parks, at this time they only take cash there is no app payment so make sure you have your coins! There is a free carpark by the marina which you’ll find if you’re driving out towards Warkworth marked ‘Marina/Braid’. There’s a limited number of on street free parking around the streets at the harbour but these fill up quickly. Queen Street provides parking along the main street although it is time limited.
